Nungwi and Kendwa are the most popular beaches in Zanzibar — and for good reason. Unlike the east coast, there’s no extreme low tide. You can swim any time of day. The sunsets are spectacular (sun sets over the ocean). The water is turquoise and calm.
The east coast is the kite surfing capital of Zanzibar. Consistent trade winds (June-September) create perfect conditions. The beaches are wide, the water is shallow, and the vibe is laid-back. Plus, it’s significantly cheaper than the north coast.
Kizimkazi is famous for its dolphin tours — you can swim with wild bottlenose and humpback dolphins. The beaches are quieter, less developed, and more authentic than the north or east coasts. Perfect for travelers seeking peace and nature.
Matemwe is the best beach for travelers who want peace and quiet. It’s less developed than Nungwi, less windy than Paje, and offers excellent snorkeling at nearby Mnemba Atoll. The vibe is authentic, relaxed, and uncrowded.
Between Paje and Jambiani. Quieter than Paje, similar tides. Good for kite surfing and budget stays.
North of Paje. Beautiful beach, some luxury resorts. Quieter than Paje, similar tide issues.
Further north on east coast. Many large resorts. Beautiful beach, but extreme low tide issues.
Peninsula with beaches on both sides. Stunning sunsets on the west-facing side. Remote, quiet, beautiful.
Kendwa or Matemwe
Kendwa: Stunning sunsets, calm swimming, romantic resorts. Matemwe: Secluded, peaceful, beautiful bungalows, close to Mnemba Atoll.
Kendwa or Nungwi
Safe swimming (no low tide issues), calm water, many family-friendly resorts with pools and kids’ clubs. Avoid east coast (low tide issues).
Jambiani or Paje (East Coast)
Guesthouses from $20-50/night, affordable restaurants, cheap kite surfing lessons. North coast is 2-3x more expensive.
Nungwi
Beach parties, live music, bars, full moon parties. Kendwa also has parties (famous full moon parties). East coast is very quiet at night.
Paje
World-class conditions — consistent winds (June-September), shallow lagoon, many schools. Jambiani is second best.
Kizimkazi
90%+ chance to see dolphins. Early morning boat tours. Combine with a quiet, authentic beach stay.
