Moshi Kilimanjaro Tanzania
Choosing your first Kilimanjaro route feels overwhelming. Seven routes, different difficulty levels, varying success rates. Here’s the short answer: The Machame Route (7 days) is best for most beginners. The Marangu Route works if you prefer huts over camping. The Lemosho Route (8 days) gives the highest success rate but costs more.
Machame Route (7 days) — 85% success rate, scenic, “whiskey route” nickname, camping only. Marangu Route (6 days) — 75% success rate, hut accommodation, “Coca-Cola route”. Lemosho Route (8 days) — 90% success rate, best acclimatization, higher cost.
🎯 Our verdict for beginners: Choose 7-day Machame if you’re reasonably fit and want a classic experience. Choose 6-day Marangu if you refuse to camp. Choose 8-day Lemosho if budget allows and you want maximum success chance.
Every year, over 35,000 climbers attempt Mount Kilimanjaro. Nearly 40% don’t make it to the summit. The #1 reason? Poor route selection leading to inadequate acclimatization.

Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” (tougher than the “Coca-Cola” Marangu, but worth it). Machame is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro — and for good reason.
The “Coca-Cola Route” — the only route with hut accommodation (dormitory-style bunks). Popular with budget travelers and those who hate sleeping in tents.
Lemosho is essentially a superior version of Machame — starting from the west side of the mountain, joining Machame route on Day 3. Fewer crowds, better scenery, and the highest success rate of any standard route.
Difficulty: Extreme | Days: 5-6 | Success Rate: 60%
Umbwe is the shortest and steepest route — nicknamed the “suicide route” by local guides. Near-vertical sections, almost no acclimatization time. Only experienced trekkers with prior high-altitude experience should attempt it. Beginners: Avoid completely.
Difficulty: Moderate | Days: 5 | Success Rate: 65%
The 5-day Marangu itinerary is a beginner trap. It looks cheap and easy, but the rushed ascent causes altitude sickness. If you must take Marangu, pay for the 6-day version. The extra day doubles your summit chance.
Difficulty: Hard | Days: 6 | Success Rate: 70%
Some operators sell a 6-day Machame to save costs. Don’t book it. The missing day (Karanga Camp) is critical for acclimatization. Always book 7-day Machame or longer.

Technically, Marangu is the “easiest” in terms of terrain — no scrambling, gradual slopes. But easier terrain doesn’t mean higher success rate. Machame and Lemosho have better acclimatization profiles, making them easier to summit despite being slightly more challenging physically.
Lemosho 8-day (90% success rate) followed by Northern Circuit 9-day (95%). Both have excellent “climb high, sleep low” profiles. Machame 7-day is next at 85%.
Not recommended. Beginners should train for 2-3 months before attempting Kilimanjaro. Focus on hiking, stair climbing, and cardiovascular endurance. Untrained beginners have significantly lower success rates regardless of route choice.
Marangu 5-day is cheapest ($1,200-1,800) but has the lowest success rate (65%). We recommend spending $300-500 more for Machame 7-day ($1,800-2,500) — the higher summit chance is worth the investment.
Machame and Lemosho have the most scenic variety — you traverse multiple climate zones and see Kilimanjaro from all angles. Rongai (north side) has different but also beautiful views, especially of the Kenyan plains.
