Mount Meru

Mount Meru Overview

Nestled 70 kilometers (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in southeast Arusha Region, Tanzania, Mount Meru stands as a dormant stratovolcano, reaching an impressive height of 4,562.13 meters (14,968 ft). Its commanding presence is visible from Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days, offering a breathtaking sight against the Tanzanian landscape. As the fifth-highest peak in Africa, Mount Meru holds a prominent position in the region, serving as a testament to the geological wonders of East Africa.
Situated just north of Arusha city, Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, surpassed only by Mount Kilimanjaro. Trekkers typically embark on the Momella route, commencing their ascent from Momella gate on the mountain’s eastern flank. Despite its dormant state, Mount Meru’s history is punctuated by minor eruptions, with the most recent recorded in 1910. Today, the mountain’s expansive caldera, stretching 2.2 miles (3.5 km) wide, forms the focal point of Arusha National Park, offering a haven for diverse wildlife, including monkeys, leopards, and an array of bird species, amid its lush forested slopes.
