4 Days Mount Meru Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha (1400 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)
Embark on a 5-7 hour hike after breakfast in Arusha (1400 m), starting from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. While porters organize belongings, register with TANAPA before commencing the ascent. Witness diverse wildlife resembling a walking safari, including giraffes, zebras, and buffalo. Accompanied by an armed ranger, trek past the Ngarenanyuki River and a waterfall en route to Miriakamba Hut (2500 m), where a hot dinner awaits amid a captivating sunset.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) – Saddle Hut (3500 m)
Ascend a steep trail along the ridge to Saddle Hut (3500 m) after breakfast. Encounter wildlife along the route, with views of Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. Optionally hike Little Mt. Meru (3820 m) for acclimatization before an early dinner and rest for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500 m) – Summit Attempt (4566 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500 m)
Commence the summit attempt navigating a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800 m) and Cobra Point (4350 m). Scramble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs to reach the summit of Meru (4565 m) at sunrise. Descend to Saddle Hut for a break before continuing to Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut (2500 m) – Arusha (1400 m)
Descend to Momella gate through forests and meadows, spotting wildlife along the way. Meet the driver at the base of Mt. Meru for the return journey to Arusha after breakfast and a well-deserved rest.
