9-Day Northern Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)
Trek Time: 3–4 hours
Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. Begin your trek through dense rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp (3,610m)

Trek Time: 5–6 hours
Hike into the moorland zone with expansive views. Reach Shira Plateau and camp at Shira 1.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

Trek Time: 3–4 hours
A gentle hike across the plateau with great acclimatization. Explore nearby ridges and rest at Shira 2 Camp.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower (4,600m) – Moir Hut (4,200m)

Trek Time: 6–7 hours
Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to the remote Moir Hut on the mountain’s northern flank.

Day 5: Moir Hut – Buffalo Camp (4,020m)

Trek Time: 5–7 hours
Climb over a ridge with panoramic views of the plains below. Continue east along the Northern Circuit to Buffalo Camp.

Day 6: Buffalo Camp – Third Cave Camp (3,870m)

Trek Time: 5–6 hours
Hike through remote alpine terrain with chances of wildlife sightings. Overnight at Third Cave Camp.

Day 7: Third Cave – School Hut (4,750m)

Trek Time: 4–5 hours
Final ascent before summit night. Arrive at School Hut for rest and preparation for the summit push.

Day 8: School Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Trek Time: 12–15 hours
Start summit attempt around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, at sunrise. Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 9: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi

Trek Time: 3–4 hours
Final descent through the rainforest. Receive summit certificates and return to your hotel in Moshi.

Weather, Seasons & Timing

January to March

These months offer the warmest conditions, with clear skies typically in the mornings and evenings. Light clouds may develop during the day, occasionally obscuring the summit by the afternoon. It’s an ideal time to climb for those who appreciate pleasant temperatures and stunning, unobstructed views.

April to May

The long rainy season begins in April and continues through May, bringing heavy rainfall to the lower slopes and snowstorms at the summit. During this time, the mountain is frequently shrouded in dense clouds, limiting visibility and obscuring the scenic views. Climbing conditions can be challenging, so it’s generally advisable to avoid attempting a climb during this period.

June to October

This period is the driest and among the most popular times to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Clear skies are common, providing excellent visibility and ideal trekking conditions. While the days are generally pleasant, temperatures can drop significantly at night, particularly at higher elevations.

Late October to November

From late October through November, short rains bring increased cloud cover and wetter conditions. Although climbing is still possible during this time, the mountain is frequently obscured by clouds, and the rain can make the trek more challenging and less enjoyable.
