7 Days Rongai Route Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Take some time to relax and settle in, enjoying the local surroundings. Later, meet with your guide for a comprehensive briefing about the upcoming trek. They will also conduct a thorough equipment check to ensure you have everything you need for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Rongai Gate (1950m) to Simba Camp (2600m)

After an early breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to the Rongai Gate, the starting point of your trek. Here, you’ll complete the necessary registration procedures before setting off on the trail. The day’s hike takes you through dense rainforest, where you may encounter various wildlife species, including colobus monkeys and exotic birdlife. Arrive at Simba Camp in the afternoon, where you’ll be welcomed with a hearty dinner and spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Simba Camp (2600m) to Second Cave (3450m)

As you leave Simba Camp behind, the trail gradually ascends through the enchanting rainforest, offering glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro’s majestic peaks. Traverse through lush vegetation and moss-covered trees before emerging into the vast expanse of the moorland zone. Along the way, enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys and plains. Reach Second Cave Camp in the afternoon, nestled amidst rocky outcrops, and settle in for the night.

Day 4: Second Cave (3450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3600m)

Today’s trek leads you through diverse landscapes as you continue your ascent towards Kilimanjaro’s summit. The trail winds its way across undulating terrain, offering ever-changing views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you approach Kikelewa Camp, you’ll be greeted by the sight of towering peaks and rugged ridges, providing a stunning backdrop to your evening rest.

Day 5: Kikelewa Camp (3600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m)

Prepare for a challenging yet rewarding day of hiking as you make your way towards Mawenzi Tarn Camp. The route takes you through the alpine desert, where sparse vegetation and rocky terrain dominate the landscape. Along the way, marvel at the imposing presence of Mawenzi Peak, the second-highest summit of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp in the afternoon, situated beside a tranquil mountain lake, and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4330m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Today marks the final push towards Kilimanjaro’s summit, as you ascend to Kibo Hut, your last camp before the summit attempt. The trail gradually gains altitude, passing through barren landscapes and rocky slopes. As you climb higher, you’ll feel the effects of the altitude, making each step a testament to your determination and perseverance. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll rest and prepare for the challenging summit ascent.

Day 7: Summit Day 

Start the climb from Kibo Hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) before dawn, navigating the icy slopes to Gilman’s Point. Witness the sunrise at Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, and enjoy panoramic views. Descend to Kibo Hut for a rest, then continue to Horombo Hut (3720m), reflecting on your journey.
