5 Days Marangu Route Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania – Transfer to Moshi or Arusha
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your tour operator or guide. After clearing immigration and customs, you’ll embark on a scenic drive to either Moshi or Arusha, depending on your arrangements. These vibrant towns serve as gateways to Kilimanjaro and offer a chance to rest and prepare for your adventure ahead. Spend the day settling into your accommodation, meeting your fellow trekkers, and discussing the details of your climb with your guide. Take this time to relax and acclimate to the Tanzanian climate.
Day 1: Moshi or Arusha to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m) – Mandara Hut (2720m)
After an early breakfast, your journey officially begins as you depart from your accommodation and head towards Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arrival at the Marangu Gate, you’ll undergo registration and meet your guides and porters. The trek commences through the lush rainforest, offering glimpses of exotic flora and fauna. The trail gradually ascends, leading you to Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Enjoy a warm meal amidst the tranquility of the forest, and rest up for the adventures to come.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2720m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)
As the sun rises, you’ll continue your ascent through diverse landscapes, leaving the rainforest behind. The trail winds through heathland, where striking plant species and panoramic views accompany your journey. Passing Maundi Crater, you’ll marvel at the vastness of Kilimanjaro’s surroundings. Arriving at Horombo Hut, situated at a higher elevation, you’ll notice the cooler temperatures and thinner air. Take time to acclimatize, hydrate, and appreciate the stunning vistas stretching before you.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)
Today’s trek leads you through the alpine desert, characterized by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. With each step, the air grows thinner, signaling your approach to the summit. Passing iconic landmarks such as the towering Mawenzi Peak, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for Kilimanjaro’s geological wonders. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, located near the crater rim, you’ll prepare for the final push to Uhuru Peak. Rest and nourish your body, for tomorrow marks the culmination of your expedition.
Day 4: Summit Attempt: Kibo Hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)
In the early hours before dawn, you’ll embark on the exhilarating summit bid. With headlamps illuminating the path, you’ll navigate the challenging terrain, guided by the stars above. As the first light of dawn breaks, you’ll reach Gilman’s Point, a significant milestone on your journey. Pressing onward, you’ll traverse the snow-covered slopes to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Stand atop the summit, surrounded by breathtaking vistas, and savor the moment of triumph. After capturing memories and bidding farewell to the summit, you’ll descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Horombo Hut, where you’ll celebrate your achievement with fellow trekkers.
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Marangu Gate (1860m) – Return to Moshi or Arusha
Your final descent retraces the path through Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes, offering moments of reflection and gratitude. As you emerge from the rainforest and reach the Marangu Gate, a sense of accomplishment fills the air. Here, amidst cheers and congratulations, you’ll receive certificates of achievement and bid farewell to your guides and porters. After a well-deserved rest, you’ll transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, where hot showers, delicious meals, and comfortable accommodations await.
